Perfect Independence gift
BELMOPAN, Belize, Sept 22, CMC – Belize was handed a perfect 31st birthday present when the government announced that it had been successful in raising funds to meet a partial payment on its multi-million dollar foreign debt, referred to as the “super bond”.
As Belizeans celebrated 31 years of political independence on Friday, the Dean Barrow government issued a statement indicating that it has been “successful in raising the money required to make a partial payment… of eleven point seven million dollars, which amounts to approximately fifty per cent of the interest payment due to the bondholders”.
In an immediate response, a committee representing a group of bondholders said it would not go to court for an additional 60 days to allow for the conclusion of negotiations on debt restructuring.
