Guyanese man may become jailbird for songbird smuggling

NEW YORK, June 28, CMC – A Guyanese man was released on bail in a United States court on Wednesday after he was nabbed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, accused of attempting to smuggle in exotic songbirds popular with the Guyanese community here.

 

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities said that Marlon Hariram was caught with nine live finches in his shirt sleeves headed for their debut in a warbling contest in Queens, New York. Now, Hariram faces his third shot at a conviction for the illegal trade.
